These were some of the many top hit songs of the year 1966.  It was a pivotal time, the old school like Sinatra & Dean Martin were still on the charts, but there was also the British Invasion.  Along with that, there was a very unpopular war and a new wave and generation of music which people were gravitating towards to try and forget what their parents’ generation meant. An end to World War II was a great thing, except for the proliferation of Atomic Nuclear weapons.  The Korean “conflict” was just a precursor to the Vietnam War, so a new and very different generation was on the rise, as was the music. Many will argue this was the end of the Midcentury culture. I believe it would continue for nearly a decade more before disco came about, and at the very least, let’s count until Nixon left the White House.
