Highball

The Highball, better known as the “&” or N drinks are simply one’s spirit of choice in their soda of choice. This can be a Rum & Coke, Gin & Tonic, Scotch & Soda, etc etc. Typically this would be served in a tall glass (known as a highball glass) which is filled with ice, then 2 ounces of liquor, and topped off with soda. It is the most basic of all drinks and probably something you would order in a dive bar because it is not likely they knew how to many any other cocktail with care. A highball is a dated term, anyone still calling it a “highball” was likely alive in the 1970s and old enough to drink. It is after they got fancy names to replace the “&” drinks.
