Opened in 1962, what The Mai Kai was to the South in Florida, the Hawaii Kai was to the North in Manhattan. For movie buffs, it’s a great source of trivia due to the fact that several scenes from the movie Goodfellas was filmed here including the Copacabana dining room scene, and the “Bamboo Lounge” interior. When it actually went out of business is a guess, but certainly by 1990 it was over.  Like most places this size, it got nearly impossible to keep up with the rent while brining customers in to pay for it.  It was in the early 1990s that Mayor Giuliani also started to clean up Times Square which only added to the expense of the neighborhood.
